ABOUT THE WALK
The 2017 Chief Albert Luthuli Walk will be held on Saturday 22 July 2017. The 11, 5 km walk will commemorate Chief Luthuli's final walk to the railway bridge where there was allegedly a train accident that led to his untimely death.
Chief Albert Luthuli Marathon
The marathon will start at Chief Luthuli’s statue on Chief Albert Luthuli Street in KwaDukuza, run southwards on R102. There will be a slight detour to get runners past the old sight of the Melville sugar Mill. Turn left at the Groutville High School into Maqina Road towards the N2 Highway. Turn left at EThembeni towards Mbhekamuzi Primary School. Turn Right to the Accident Site and back to Groutville UCCSA and up Cranbrook Road to the Groutville Sports field past Luthuli Museum.
Chief Albert Luthuli Walk
The walk will be from the Luthuli Museum on Nokukhanya Luthuli Street to the Memorial Site returning via Chief Luthuli’s gravesite at the Groutville United Congregational Church to the Groutville Sports Field. This year marks 50 years after the tragic death of Chief Albert Luthuli on 21 July 1967.
On the route is the Aldinville Primary School, where Chief Luthuli started schooling. Next to it is the King Shaka Observation Rock where king Shaka used to sit and watch his warriors in Hlomendlini and his cattle in Shakaskraal. The Charlotedale level crossing and railway station is also a site of significance.
The Fund Raising Golf Day is on Friday 21 July at 11 am
